Joberg2C Mountain Bike Sponsorship Early in 2019 Eskort was approached by Dr David Kloek the Senior ICU Specialist and Paediatric Cardiology Fellow at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH) (specialising in Paediatric Burns Unit) to provide sponsorship to a team of 5 riders who had pledged to do the Joberg2C mountain bike race to raise funds for the Baragwanath Paedriatric Burns unit. This facility is severely underfunded and in dire need of firstly creating an environment that is warm and friendly to the hundreds of young patients who have suffered major trauma and often extensive burn injuries. Secondly, there are often shortages of critical medicines and other equipment needed to treat the patients effectively. This race is certainly not for the fainthearted and covers just over 900 kilometers over 9 days. The riders start in Balfour (Gauteng) and then move south into the Free State and then cross over the Drakensberg eventually finishing in Scottburgh (KZN). The Joberg2C follows a community-driven model, where every water table and race village are manned by a local community. The Joberg2c uses no outside caterers or suppliers, rather encouraging the communities along the route to utilise the event as a fund-raising platform. As a by-product of this model, the most amazing energy and spirit is generated at each water table and race village, all filtering through to the riders and race crew. The event has a following that has spread far around world and will spread ever further this year with 2019’s event playing host to a total of 238 foreign riders from a total of 28 countries. In all, 800 lucky riders (maximum bikers permitted) will enjoy the experience. Joberg2c. Eskort has committed a sponsorship to these adventurous and determined cyclists based on the fact that Chris Hani Baragwanath serves many of our Eskort consumers in the southern Gauteng area and that the Joberg2C philosophy matches the Eskort believe of community-based assistance. The team participating wearing their striking Burns unit cycling gear are; ➢ David Kloek- Senior ICU Specialist and Paediatric Cardiology Fellow at CHBAH ➢ Michael Kloek- COO of First National Bank (Zambia) ➢ Charl Verwey- Paediatric Pulmonologist at CHBAH ➢ Christopher Langefeld- Clinical Psychologist (with focus on Paediatric trauma) ➢ Alain Morard- Avid mountain biker who has travelled from Switzerland to South African on a motor-bike!
